THE GREAT INDIAN

CIVILIZATIONS

OF

LATIN AMERICA

Aztecs--Incas--Maya

As you have learned, the Americas were inhabited by advanced civilizations long before the Spaniards arrived. Imagine arriving to discover the great pyramids of the Aztecs and Maya, the roads and temples of the Incas, or the highly developed cities of all three.

TASK--One way to imagine these things is to put yourself in the place of one of the explorers from Spain in search of gold and riches. Your first job, though, is to prepare a description of the new land and the people for the King of Spain.

Instructions--In groups of 3, choose one of the Civilizations to describe. Each member of your group should take on 2 specialist roles. You will provide your group with information using your specialized skill. Each group will need the following specialists:

Cartographer--will draw a map of the city or village and label

Translator--will interview the chief or king

Engineer--will observe the architectural features of the city or surrounding territory

Military Specialist--will meet the Native Americans and describe the people

Artist--will provide a drawing of the people in traditional dress and show them working crops, attending ceremonies, and any other daily activities

Religious Specialist--will observe and describe the religious beliefs and rituals

After information has been gathered, the group will meet to decide the order to present the material. This presentation is both visual and oral. Prepare a power point presentation and be prepared for each person to tell about what they found out in their jobs during the presentation. As you present, pretend that the King of Spain is in the audience to hear your presentation.
